### The Evolution of Australia's Electoral System and the Impact of Media on Reform

If I am not mistaken, Australia's electoral system in the 1980s was largely similar to what we have today. However, during that era, we witnessed a series of significant reforms, including the opening of trade and immigration with Asia, as well as the deregulation of finance and energy sectors. It appears that when faced with critical challenges, we were able to implement substantial changes to the system.

The current "conservatism" in our system seems to be more a result of the incentives created by the media, which have been amplified by the advent of social media. The media is incentivized to complain about everything and adopt an anti-establishment stance. While this constant criticism may create a desire for reform in a hypothetical sense, it often leads to a reinforcement of the status quo. This is because meaningful reform requires broad agreement in favor of specific changes, rather than a constant stream of negative polarization.

In conclusion, the media's focus on criticism and negativity, while it may highlight the need for reform, ultimately hinders the process of achieving meaningful change. To foster an environment conducive to reform, we must shift the narrative towards constructive dialogue and consensus-building.
